PEOPLE

"There is a Hindu temple, beside it is a Jain temple and behind it is a mosque. India is a country with so many different people, each with so many different ways of doing things, but somehow together it works."

Alok Rawat works in the tourism industry and is in tune with both the needs of the foreign visitors as well as those of the locals. His own travels in his home country fill him with wonder at the chaos and harmony that is India.

SUSTAINING THE COMMUNITY
Other things which bring people together.

"The land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence, of genies and giants, of tigers and elephants, the country of a hundred nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and two million gods - India is nothing if not diverse."
  Mark Twain

LIVELIHOOD

The Tibetan people of Darjeeling are mostly refugees. One place where they are keeping their culture alive is at the Tibetan Refugee Self-help Center. The Center provides a place for the community to gather and share strories, houses around 700, and offers a temple and orphanage and various workshops for the spinning and weaving of wool into traditional Tibetan garments.

One man's ancient hands wind the wool yarn, while another man's ancient voice reads a yarn from a Tibetan newspaper.

FOOD

There are many festivals in India, and many of them involve eating foods and sweets. The traditional food is the thali, originally from South India and Gujarat. A typical thali is served on a huge silver platter with a large section, medium section and three or four smaller sections molded into it. In each of the sections, dal (lentils), kadhi (yogurt), vegetable and bean dishes are served, usually as much as you can eat. Rice and/or bread (puri, chapatti, papad) are the main neutral food. Salads, traditional sweets and pickles accompany the meal.
